1. Utilize Trending Keywords:

When you submit a resume online, your resume is typically scanned by a computer program for keywords relating to the company’s values and quality job performance. This scanning happens before your resume is placed in front of the recruiter so it is incredibly valuable to include as many of these keywords as possible. 2. Add a “Key Skills” Section:
Longer bullet points under work experience is great but don't forget to add a section listing your skills so potential employers know exactly what you are capable of. A “key skills” section can include skills you’ve gained from school or past work experience such as Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, Microsoft Office, any coding language you’ve used, and more.
3. Align Your Resume With Your Industry:
Use more than words on your resume to convey who you are and what you will bring to a company. Especially if you are in an industry where visual appearance is very important, like graphic design or fashion, don’t be afraid to get creative with the appearance of your resume. For example, I have seen students who are interested in careers in web design include a QR code on their resume that directs the recruiter to a website the student has created. This allows you to easily display your skills to a recruiter.
4. Include Words From The Job Listing in Your Resume:
Recruiters write job listings for a reason, they are describing their ideal candidate. Include words from the job listing, specifically action verbs, to catch a recruiter’s attention. Also, as we mentioned earlier, if the company uses a program to scan your resume for keywords, many words from the job listing are likely included in the program’s desired keywords.
5. Do NOT Waste Space With a Objective:
You have probably heard someone tell you it is important to write a 2-3 sentence objective statement at the top of your resume. I disagree, everyone including the employer knows what your objective is… to get the job! Anything that is mentioned in an objective statement can be addressed in your cover letter.
